CANSA: Striving for a Cancer Smart South Africa

CANSA is dedicated to fighting cancer to save lives.

CANSA run a number of prevention programmes and patient care services in line with their mission , which is to substantially reduce the impact of cancer by promoting health in all communities within South Africa through advocacy and the sustainable facilitation of research, prevention, early detection and care.

In order to fund their services, CANSA relies on the goodwill of individual, government and corporate partners to support projects such as the CANSA Shavathon.

We all love CANSA Shavathon!

Cancer is increasing in the developing world but 40% of cancers can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.

CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s best-loved events in support of a worthy cause.

People shave or spray their hair to show solidarity with cancer survivors or to remember loved ones lost to the disease.

Up to 40% of cancers can be prevented by living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
This includes:

  • Not using any tobacco products
  • Eating high fibre and low fat foods
  • Drinking lots of fresh clean water
  • Getting plenty of exercise
  • Watching your weight

Shavathon also raises awareness and funds for the fight against cancer as all money generated goes to CANSA prevention programmes and patient care services.

CANSA is dedicating February and March to promoting a balanced lifestyle in line with the World Cancer Day theme for 4 February 2009 of “I love my healthy active childhood”.

Children get into healthy habits from a young age, so we encourage you and your children to eat well and exercise regularly. CANSA has many exciting tips and activities to make eating and exercising lots of fun for everyone. Read more...
